Jazz on the Green at Midtown Crossing!

Fireworks, Parachutes And Free Dance Lessons Highlight 2014 Series

Omaha Performing Arts will again present Jazz on the Green at Midtown Crossing this summer. The free outdoor concert series will run six consecutive Thursdays, from July 10 to August 14, 2014, and is located in the idyllic Turner Park in the heart of Midtown Crossing. Concerts will begin at 7:30 p.m. on the permanent stage of The Pavilion at Turner Park. The lawn is open beginning at 5 p.m. every Thursday, except for July 17 when it opens after the United States Navy Parachute Team lands at Turner Park at 5:45 p.m.
A new addition to Jazz on the Green will be free dance lessons before two of the performances. Omaha Ballroom, under the direction of Elizabeth Edwards, will offer free dance lessons prior to the performances on July 24 (salsa dancing) and August 7 (swing dance). Lessons will begin at 6:45 p.m. and will last 30 minutes.

The soul/funk Omaha band The 9s will start the Jazz on the Green season off on July 10. The 9s consists of Jason Birnstihl, guitar and lead vocals; Mitch Towne, keyboards and vocals; Craig Balderston, bass guitar and vocals; and Dan Maca, drums. The quartet combines elements of funk, rock, and pop to create a unique sound.

The seven-piece Great Lakes Horizons Navy Band will perform a mix of blues, jazz and funk on July 17. The lawn opens late for this performance, allowing for the United States Navy Parachute Team, commonly known as the Leap Frogs, to make a special appearance arriving by air into Turner Park at 5:45 p.m. The lawn will open after the Leap Frogs’ arrival. The band performs at 7:30 p.m., with fireworks, provided by Midtown Crossing, following the concert.

Cuban Big Band Conjunto Chappottin Y Sus Estrellas will bring festive Latin jazz to the series on July 24. Founded in the 1940s, the band is considered one of the most renowned “Son” bands in Cuba today, according to Latin Pulse Music. Free salsa dance lessons will begin at 6:45 p.m.

Fans of New Orleans-style jazz will want to come out for Big Sam’s Funky Nation concert on July 31. Big Sam Williams leads the band, playing a blend of funk, rock, hip-hop, jazz and R&B punctuated by brass harmonies of the trombone and trumpet. Big Sam got his start playing with the Dirty Dozen Brass Band, before becoming a band leader.

Bringing traditional and contemporary sounds of Big Bands will be Sing, Sing, Swing Orchestra on August 7. Led by pianist Robert Glaser, the local ensemble features 12 members, including two vocalists, who perform the music of Glenn Miller, Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Pancho Sanchez and more. Free swing dance lessons will begin at 6:45 p.m.

The legendary New Orleans band, Dirty Dozen Brass Band, will perform the final show of the season on August 14. Since 1977, the six-man group has sought to reinvigorate New Orleans brass standards through their style of “musical gumbo” as band members like to describe their style.

All Jazz on the Green at Midtown Crossing concerts are free to the public, with no reservations or tickets needed. Turner Park opens at 5:00 p.m. (except for July 17) and performances start at 7:30 p.m. Midtown Crossing offers convenient and secure parking for more than 3,000 vehicles. Two parking garages are easily accessible from 33rd, Farnam and Harney streets. In both garages, the first three hours are free and visitors pay only $1 for each hour thereafter (with a maximum fee of $6). Ample metered parking is available along Farnam Street. Metered parking is short-term (max. two hours) and is monitored Monday Friday from 8:00 a.m. 5:00 p.m.

Cox Music and Movies Series in July at the Holland Performing Arts

‘Frozen’ and Dani Cleveland and Friends Kick Series Off on July 11, 2014

Omaha Performing Arts is pleased to announce the return of its Cox Music & Movies series. These free public events will run Fridays, July 11-25, 2014. Each Cox Music & Movies evening will feature a performance by an area band followed by a family-friendly film presented in the courtyard of the Holland Performing Arts Center, 1200 Douglas St. The Holland Performing Arts Center’s courtyard will open at 7 p.m. with music beginning at 7:30 p.m. and the film beginning at dusk, or around 8:45 p.m., rain or shine. Grass seating is available and blankets and chairs are welcome. Guckenheimer, the exclusive food service provider for the Holland Performing Arts Center, will provide concessions. “Frozen.” Before the movie and back by popular demand, Dani Cleveland and Friends will perform a high energy soul and R&B concert. Cleveland performed at Cox Music and Movies in 2013. The next movie in the series is “Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl,” screened on July 18. Performing before the movie will be the Lincoln-based American roots band, Root Marm Chicken Farm Jug Band. The group plays old-timey music on traditional and homemade instruments. At its core are Ian Craig, on the guitar, vocals, kazoo and harmonica; Matt Wynn on the banjo and bones; Josh Kornbluh on his makeshift drum kit; and Kyle Bruggeman on the great big gallon jug, as well as various whistles and other noise makers. Joining them for their performance at the Holland performance are Ash Sharp, a multi-instrumentalist who often sits in on his "fiddola" (viola), but is equally comfortable on the baritone guitar or toy piano and Casey Hollingsworth (a.k.a. Bud Heavy of Bud Heavy and the High Lifes) on the mandolin and vocals.

“Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone” will close the series on July 25. The five-piece country swing band The Electroliners performs before the movie begins. The Electroliners were nominated for Omaha Entertainment and Arts Awards for Best Country/Americana in 2012 and 2013.

Band members include Douglas Kabourek, drums; Stephanie Krysl, vocals/fiddle; Travis L. Sing, doghouse bass/vocals; Patrick White, guitar/vocals; and Kate Williams, piano/accordion/vocals.

at the Mid-America Center

On June 6th, 2014 three greatly talented artists will share one stage at the Mid-America Center.  Rick Springfield, Eddie Money, and Little River Band will all perform for one night and one night only.

Rick Springfield is noted for all his accomplishments as an actor, a best-selling author and the subject of a documentary.  Rick Springfield’s first love has always been music, since the first time he picked up a guitar at the age of 12 in his native Australia.

With 25 million albums sold, 17 top-40 hits, including Don’t Talk to Strangers, An Affair of the Heart, I've Done Everything for You, Love Somebody, and Human Touch, as well as a 1981 Grammy® Best Male Rock Vocal win for his No. 1 single hit Jessie’s Girl behind him, Springfield has more to say with his latest Universal Music Enterprises release, Songs for the End of the World.

Still playing nearly 100 live shows a year, Springfield’s bond with his audience is the subject of the recent documentary An Affair of the Heart, which was previewed earlier this year, winning special jury awards at both the Nashville and Florida Film Festivals. He also recently wrote and recorded a new song with Dave Grohl (Foo Fighters / Nirvana) as well as being a featured guest in Grohl’s new documentary about “Sound City,” the fabled San Fernando Valley recording studio.

Rock icon, Eddie Money, is back on the road with his all-star band.  Money is an accomplished musician, singing, writing, and playing the saxophone, harmonica and piano.  Eddie has recorded over a dozen albums of his own (selling over 28 million records), and has done numerous projects in television and film.

"Everything I do, I do it for you". Eddie Money says it at least once, every show. And he means it. This straight up rock and roll icon has been making music and delivering it to his fans since the mid 70's, and wouldn't have it any other way. With hits like "Two Tickets To Paradise", "Baby Hold On", "Walk On Water", "Think I'm In Love" and "Shakin", Eddie continues to be one of the hardest working men in rock and roll.

Little River Band was formed in Melbourne, Australia in 1975.  Their goal was to get airplay on American radio and they achieved that goal with good songwriting, powerful vocals, and guitar harmonies.  They immediately claimed their place as one of the great vocal bands of the ‘70s and the ‘80s.

Between 1976 and 1983, chart success in America includes the following singles: “It’s a Long Way There, Help is on Its Way, Happy Anniversary, Reminiscing, Lady, Cool Change, Lonesome Loser, The Night Owls, and Take it Easy on Me”.

The current lineup brings new energy and arrangements to the classic hits, making new memories for the audience out of each live performance.  It’s always fun to watch as people are swept up by the show’s vitality and the volute of hits from Little River Band’s history.  You will see plenty of people mouthing the words…”I love this song… I forgot it was one of  Little River Band’s hits!”

The Mid-America Center or “MAC” is the Heartland's premier entertainment and convention center.
