Together Counts!

In the fight against obesity, partners of the Healthy Weight Commitment Foundation helped reduce individual calorie consumption by 78/day. I’m doing my part by encouraging my kids to eat the rainbow this week. What can you do?

Here’s some food for thought. Food companies recently cut 6.4 trillion calories per year from the grocery store, but I think we can do better together as families to help stop the rise of obesity. Together Counts has tips for reducing calorie consumption and more!

Omaha Face Off!

Help a fellow Hockey dad and coach as he was recently diagnosed with ALS.  Tim has coached with my husband in the Omaha Hockey League and his kids have played hockey with my kids.  The Omaha Hockey Club is like family.  Let's help him out.

Tim was diagnosed with ALS, often referred to as Lou Gehrig's disease. He's always given to our community and now we give back to the Cacioppo family.
Imagine for a moment that your body was paralyzed but your mind was fully functional and able to sense everything going on around you. While this is a nightmare scenario, it is a looming certainty for my good friend Tim Cacioppo. Tim was recently diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), often referred to as Lou Gehrig's disease.
Tim will bravely endure symptoms including weakening and wasting of limb and trunk muscles as well as progressive paralysis of vital functions such as speech, swallowing and ultimately breathing. As these symptoms advance they will not just take a physical toll on Tim, they will place overwhelming medical bills and unimaginable fear on his wife Natalie and their four beautiful children Salvatore, Vincent, Sebastian and Anna.
The life expectancy for someone diagnosed with ALS is two to five years. While diagnosed in 2013, it has been deemed Tim has already been living with detectable symptoms for over two years.  Currently the most noticeable of his symptoms is his declining speech ability and though willing himself through, he is experiencing loss of dexterity in his fingers.
Tim is currently using every moment to prepare his young sons for a life without a father as they mature into young men, prepare his young daughter who won’t have her father to walk her down the aisle at her wedding and prepare his wife for a life without her true love. Tim’s dedication to his family and the community is widely known from the hockey and soccer teams he coached, to the boy scouts that he led.  Let’s show the same level of support and compassion to Tim and his family.
We have banded together to give Tim and Natalie the ability to focus on family during this difficult time and ensure the Cacioppo Family has our continued support as this  disease takes hold of Tim’s life. The Tim Cacioppo ALS Benefit fund has been established at Wells Fargo bank for monetary donations. We are also preparing for a major fundraising dinner and auction April 6th 2014.

If you are curious about ALS, read on:

What is ALS?

En español
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), often referred to as "Lou Gehrig's Disease," is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord. Motor neurons reach from the brain to the spinal cord and from the spinal cord to the muscles throughout the body. The progressive degeneration of the motor neurons in ALS eventually leads to their death. When the motor neurons die, the ability of the brain to initiate and control muscle movement is lost. With voluntary muscle action progressively affected, patients in the later stages of the disease may become totally paralyzed.
A-myo-trophic comes from the Greek language. "A" means no or negative. "Myo" refers to muscle, and "Trophic" means nourishment–"No muscle nourishment." When a muscle has no nourishment, it "atrophies" or wastes away. "Lateral" identifies the areas in a person's spinal cord where portions of the nerve cells that signal and control the muscles are located. As this area degenerates it leads to scarring or hardening ("sclerosis") in the region.
As motor neurons degenerate, they can no longer send impulses to the muscle fibers that normally result in muscle movement. Early symptoms of ALS often include increasing muscle weakness, especially involving the arms and legs, speech, swallowing or breathing. When muscles no longer receive the messages from the motor neurons that they require to function, the muscles begin to atrophy (become smaller). Limbs begin to look "thinner" as muscle tissue atrophies.

What Types of Nerves Make Your Body Work Properly?

(from Living with ALS, Manual 1: What's It All About?)
Nerves in ALSThe body has many kinds of nerves. There are those involved in the process of thinking, memory, and of detecting sensations (such as hot/cold, sharp/dull), and others for vision, hearing, and other bodily functions. The nerves that are affected when you have ALS are the motor neurons that provide voluntary movements andmuscle power. Examples of voluntary movements are your making the effort to reach for the phone or step off a curb; these actions are controlled by the muscles in the arms and legs.
The heart and the digestive system are also made of muscle but a different kind, and their movements are not under voluntary control. When your heart beats or a meal is digested, it all happens automatically. Therefore, the heart and digestive system are not involved in ALS. Breathing also may seem to be involuntary. Remember, though, while you cannot stop your heart, you can hold your breath - so be aware that ALS may eventually have an impact on breathing.
Although the cause of ALS is not completely understood, the recent years have brought a wealth of new scientific understanding regarding the physiology of this disease.
While there is not a cure or treatment today that halts or reverses ALS, there is one FDA approved drug, riluzole, that modestly slows the progression of ALS as well as several other drugs in clinical trials that hold promise.
Importantly, there are significant devices and therapies that can manage the symptoms of ALS that help people maintain as much independence as possible and prolong survival. It is important to remember that ALS is a quite variable disease; no two people will have the same journey or experiences.  There are medically documented cases of people in whom ALS ‘burns out,’ stops progressing or progresses at a very slow rate. No matter what your individual course or situation may be, The ALS Association and your medical team are here to help.

Ellore Femme, Hair Chalk Review

Ellore Femme, has a 24 piece hair chalk product that is AWESOME!
We have tried different kinds before. Like 5 different types, brands, etc. NOTHING has been as good as the Ellore Femme product! NOTHING! It shows up in my daughters hair so
nicely and doesn't leave a nasty residue like some of the others have. A couple of the others wouldn't even show up in my daughters hair because she has darker hair....her friend who
has black hair could never get it to show in her hair...until now. We were SO excited to be
able to see it! My daughter uses a different color in her hair every day depending on what
she is wearing for the day! It washes out well too. She enjoys seeing the colorful shampoo
in her hair when she washes it out! It also doesn't seem to rub off on her clothes. It can
make the bathroom a little messy...but only when she is doing it....after all, she is only 9.
Otherwise, I have NO complaints about it at all! It is truly AWESOME!

FIRST, the directions:

1. Wet your hair.
2. Rub in your preferred Color(s)
3. Allow hair to air dry or use a straightening iron.
IMPORTANT: Avoid eye contact. Avoid digestion. If contact or digestion occurs, rinse thoroughly with clean water and seek medical attention. Keep away from young children. Recommended ages 8 and up. Use of gloves is recommended in application. No danger to skin or hair. Hair chalk may break into multiple pieces during use, transport and/or changes in temperature. You may continue to use broken hair chalk as normal.
NOW the pictures!
Here is my silly son! They were having so much fun with it!

As you can see in the below picture, he did get some on his skin....but it rinsed right off.

NOW my daughter.

NOW putting it in my daughters friends hair!
If you look in the lower right hand corner of the picture, you can see the chalk and how they are
transported.  See all the different colors?
See how nicely it is showing up?  The other chalks we have used NEVER showed up in her hair.

TOTALLY worth it!  It is so true that there are just some things you can't cut corners on....financially in this case....don't go for the cheaper hair chalks...because they are not near as nice as these.  And honestly the cost is not that bad for all of the chalk you get and it seems to go a long way.  You can get this 24 color hair chalk kit for $45.  So worth it to me!  My daughter and her friends have a blast with it!

*I was given the chalk to try out and give my honest opinion.  No money was exchanged.*

HA!! a Dining Daredevil!!

Have you ever used  It is a great service!  You go to their website and buy basically Gift Certificates, to select restaurants.  For a small price that varies...but usually only $3 or can buy a Gift Certificate to your favorite restaurant....something like, "$10 off your purchase of $20 or more."  The deals vary....but they are so worth it.  I pick restaurants that I've never been to before so I don't have to pay full price!  I also buy them for my friends and family members for Anniversaries and give them a free night of babysitting or something.  I've loved using I am betting you will too!

Break free from the same-old dining routine in 2014 and try something new with the help of To help you start your own dining adventures, has compiled the 3 hottest trends to conquer at local restaurants
near you. Resident trend-guru, President and Chief Marketing Officer Christopher Krohn provided his predictions that will grace our plate in 2014. With these trends, you're sure to have a spicy year, but only if you dare!

1. Egg-cellent Adventures

While it's hard to determine when this trend ignited, it's definitely picked up pace and could reach its peak of popularity in 2014. The "breakfast for dinner" craze and increasing popularity of regional specialties, like Korean Bibimbap and
Mexican Huevos Rancheros, will only grow the trend of egg-y fusions. Plus, there's an emerging sense from the scientific crowd that eggs are healthier than perhaps you previously thought, which will feed consumer interest in this farm-fresh favorite. All in all, 2014 will be the year of the egg, so you might as well get cracking!

We dare you: Next time you order a burger or stir fry, ask them to top it off with a fried egg or two. The added protein will help boost your metabolism and satisfy your hunger!

2. Farm to Fork

Diners' growing eco-awareness and their desire for the wholesome simplicity of home-style cooking and minimally-processed foods is on the rise. Riding this wave, restaurants are returning to their predecessors' roots, sourcing fresh
produce and natural ingredients and cooking them up in a style that more closely resembles the authentic recipes that graced Grandma's kitchen table rather than modern, industrial food products.

We dare you: When people hear "farm to fork," they immediately think of steamed vegetables, but this trend encompasses more than just radishes and such. Tender meat alternatives and locally produced cheeses are two items to look for on the menu. Don't be afraid to order something with a beet or two for an added super food bonus!

3. Tea Time, All the Time

Once confined primarily to Asian restaurants, tea is an increasingly popular beverage. In 2014, you'll find tea used for novel and surprising purposes. For example, ground teas like matcha and chai can be used as dry rubs and marinades
for beef, chicken or veggies. Tea-smoked salmon and pork will both make headway in the new year, and English-style tea-time gatherings at local cafes will also be big.

We dare you: To find these tea-fusion meals, take a trip to an Asian fusion restaurant near you and keep an eye out for tea-smoked pork, ribs, or stir fry. For an added bonus, try one of our other favorite food trends of 2014, a hot sauce like sriracha.

Soda it healthier?

Recently I reviewed SodaStream.  I was curious if it was actually healthier.  I knew it was better on the environment because you don't have all of those cans and bottles to toss.  And I knew it was better on my check book...but is it healthier?

Is SodaStream a Healthier Soda Alternative?  Here is an interesting article I ran across last night.  Read on and tell me in comments what your thoughts are.

For Every Season by Cindy Woodsmall, Book Review

For Every Season by Cindy Woodsmall, is the third book in the Amish Vines and Orchards series.

You can purchase it at Amazon or your local book retailer.

Book Description

 August 20, 2013
Working hard to develop a new Amish community outside of Unity, Maine, Rhoda Byler is fully committed to rehabilitating an orchard with business partner Samuel King. But an impulsive decision has created an unexpected strain in her relationship with her beau, Samuel’s brother, Jacob, threatening plans for the orchard. Amidst mounting tension in matters of the heart and business, Rhoda finds that this fledging settlement feels like the home she has always longed for, and she begins to embrace the God-given, heightened intuition that has always felt like a burden to her. She longs for Jacob to fully be free of his past, so they can work towards the future together.

But as Rhoda uses her gift to unpack an old secret with her Englisch neighbors, it is not her beau but an unlikely ally that cheers her on. With the orchard on shaky ground and Jacob’s plans in question, Rhoda is determined to see things through to harvest. But can she trust her insight to direct her path in matters of the heart?

Cindy Woodsmall has surprised me time and time again.  I have read several of her books and I am swept away into each of them.  Just when I think she can't get any better, she comes out with another book.

These series has been no different.  The Amish Vines and Orchards book have gripped me.  I've been losing sleep so that I could stay up to read...."just one more chapter."  :-)  Some of her other series' are, "Sisters of the Quilt"....very good.....and "Ada's House"....also very good!  When you pick up her books, she has a special way of capturing you and taking you into the book with her!  This book, book 3 in the Amish Vines and Orchards series, "For Every Season", was absolutely  no different.  I felt pain, compassion, love, conflicting feelings.....I went through just about every feeling with this book.  AND....there is ANOTHER book in this series coming out in April!  I am beyond excited...and not sure how I will bide my time while I wait!!  :-)

If you have never read any Cindy Woodsmall books, I would highly recommend it.  Start on the Amish Vines and Orchards series.  Or any of the series...but this one is fresh in my mind.  It has a great storyline of love and loss and love again.  It is a great reminder of following God's plan for our lives even if we don't like the direction He is taking us in.

You are sure to enjoy this beautifully written book!

If you've read it or any other book by Cindy Woodsmall, comment below and let me know what you thought!

Jillian Michaels is coming to Omaha!

Yippee!!  Jillian Michaels is coming to Omaha!!  Did you even KNOW she toured???  If you are not local to Omaha, I would suggest you go to and see where else she is touring.  You never know, she might be coming to a city near you!

Jillian and I have a love/hate relationship.  I LOVE her videos, and I do them on a fairly regular least when I am exercising!  :-)  I love doing them, but I do hate her during them.  But then afterward, I love her again!  :-)  I assume that is normal and she seems to have thick enough skin that it shouldn't bother her!

I am excited!!!  Are you????

Monster Jam Review....WOW! And BIG savings for the April Lincoln Show

What more can I say but...."WOW"!  This was my families first trip to Monster Jam.  All 6 of us, including my husband have never been to a Monster Jam show....until this last week.  I honestly didn't know what to expect.  I had looked on line a little I knew there were big trucks!  My friend told me to bring the kids earplugs.  So I planned on that.
(My favorite truck!)
The night came....and I loaded up my purse with 6 pairs of earplugs and my camera.  I didn't figure Jeff and I would need them....but brought them in case one of the kids dropped a pair of theirs.  It was a chilly 12 degrees outside....possibly colder by the time we got down there and got our seats.

We had to wait in line outside for awhile before we finally found out that the Will Call line was actually inside.  This is not Monster Jam's fault.  I wish the Mid America Center would have posted that a little clearer...or at all!  It was FRIGID!  With the windchill it had to have been below zero.  Anyway, we went inside and stood in line for almost 10 minutes to get our tickets in Will Call.  They didn't have a separate Will Call line....which seemed odd, but it is what it is.  Thankfully we had left early and it was still about 30 minutes before start time.
I got to meet my contact from Feld Entertainment which was very nice.  I like to put a face with the voice when I talk with them on the phone all the time!  Feld Entertainment handles the Disney Lives, Monster Jams, Disney on Ice, and more.

We had great seats.  We were close to their "parking lot" and where they would be doing their donuts!   The videos I had watched on YouTube didn't NOTHING for their actual size in person!  They are HUGE!  Unbelievable!

Then....they ALL turned on their engines and REVVED them at THE SAME TIME!!!  And drove around the track.  There were 7 or 8 of them.  Immediately I turned to my husband and mouthed "I am going to have a headache."  It was so loud that the chairs were vibrating!  It took the song, "Lets Get Ready to Rumble", to a WHOLE new level!  Thankfully I had already filled my kids' ears with ear plugs.  My youngest had a hard time keeping his in though, in retrospect, I wish I would have gotten him headphones instead.

They had a nice performance of The Star Spangled Banner, and were very patriotic and military friendly.  They made sure to have active Military people stand, and then Veterans.  It was a nice scene to see.

The air that these trucks got were amazing!  They have got to be super light!  I loved looking at the mechanics of them....from afar anyway.  It is really nothing but a cage for the driver and the engine....the outer shell is very light....just for show.

Here is my little guy....

This is Zombie.  He was one of my favorites!  Decorated so perfectly!  He landed on his "bum" a time or was pretty cool!  I didn't know they could do that without toppling over!

Then there was Monster Mutt!  The tongue actually went in and out.  I thought it was SO cute...then to find out that it was driven by a GIRL!  Even cooler!!!  My daughter thought that was SO neat!!!

I must say though...Iron Man was my absolute favorite!  LOVE the truck design!  And look at the air he could get!!!!

There wasn't a child in the arena that I saw without some sort of ear protection!  That was a good thing!  Like I said, I had ear plugs in and it was STILL crazy loud!  Almost painfully so.  I can't imagine not having my ears plugged for the whole time!
This is El Torro Loco was my husbands favorite!  Here is a picture of him BEFORE:

And a picture of him AFTER:

He was out the rest of the night.
We even had Mini Motor Bikes show us their stuff!  The yellow was for Iowa and the red was for Nebraska!  They did two races throughout the night and they each won once!
Its now that I should mention...the first time the tractors had to come in and pull a truck out....which was fairly early on, they opened the garages.  It got very breezy and cool in there.  I assumed they would close the doors/garages....but they did not.  My husband had to remind me that they had to leave them open because of exhaust fumes.  Makes sense....but golly...I wish I would have known that before I went.  I would have worn a hat and a couple more layers for all of us.  We were POPSICLES when we left!  It was warmer in the bathrooms!

Here is MaKenna trying to keep warm before she finally gave in and put her coat back on.  She had a decent time....but she thought it was sooo loud.  The highlight of her night came though when she got to meet and have her picture taken with the Monster Mutt female driver!!!  That picture is further below.
Cam wasn't so into it.  He has never really liked loud noises....and things like that just don't get him excited.
Major just complained of the noise.  But he enjoyed it when the trucks flipped over, or lost tires.
Jake really enjoyed it.  He had his ear plugs in....his hat on...and he clasped his hands over his ears the whole time...but that was all it took for him to completely enjoy it!
Later a Jet Propelled Car came out.  It was like an itty bitty electric car with a huge exhaust pipe that shot fire out!  We enjoyed the fire because we got bursts of heat!!!  But it was even louder than the trucks if that is EVEN possible!!!  It was CRAZY!  You can't see the car...but it is in front of that fire ball!  I am not sure I would want to be in that vehicle!
There were also BMX stunt riders there!  That was fun for the boys because they used to race BMX bikes.  They never did stunts though.  Fox Sports had a stand there too.  I am not sure that they were ACTUALLY there....but it was something that the presenters showed to highlight the awards Monster Truck shows that they have in Las Vegas.
Then it was time for the Free Style time!  And a bone is what enticed Monster Mutt out!!

That is when she came up to the stands and met Ms. MaKenna!
We can't forget Iron Man!  He's a BEAST!!!!

Thankful to Feld Entertainment for allowing us to check it out and blog it out to you guys.  It is an experience that everyone must see at least once!  Then you can decide if you are a fan or not!  I am a fan!  Not so much for my 14 year old...which seems weird...but I think everyone else is pretty much a fan.  Especially my daughter!

Some things to remember when you go to a Monster Jam show IN THE WINTER in the MIDWEST:

1)  Dress warmly...super warmly
2)  Have Earplugs or Headphones for each member of the family
3)  Go early enough to buy tickets, or go to Will Call and find your seats.  They do start with the patriotic show prior to their actual stated start time.

Finally....if you missed the show in Omaha, FEAR NOT!  You can reach the show in Lincoln!!!!  April 11th and 12th, Monster Jam will be at the Pinnacle Bank Arena in Lincoln.  Friday at 7:30 and Saturday at 2 and 7:30!

Nebraska Hockey Mom readers will get $8 off on all adult tickets by going to and entering the code MJAM14!  This offer expires 1/11/14, so don't delay!

Most of the Nebraska Hockey Mom family will be there!  Let me know if you get your tickets!!!!

*I was not compensated for this post, only given free tickets to the show to check it out in exchange for my honest opinion.*
